Release History

June 26, 2004 - First Publication (20 copies)

July 5, 2004 - Minor editing as directed by Grandpa; published on the Internet

My grandfather recently approached me about publishing his memoirs.  The technical part of publishing was easy - he even presented me with a typed manuscript!  My involvement included proofreading, formatting, printing, binding, and publishing on the Internet.  By far, proofreading and formatting took the greatest amount of time.  However, I was happy to see Grandpa realize his vision when I ran the first batch of twenty copies on June 26, 2004 and shipped them to him.  He managed to find four typos that were corrected and published on the Internet today (July 5, 2004).

When I took over publishing, I moved all files to Microsoft Word 2000.  The picture above was scanned from an original and reproduced straight from the resulting scan, with absolutely no editing of the picture file.  Once compiled, the entire manuscript (50 pages) was converted to PDF format via Adobe Acrobat 5.0.  Printing was done using Georgia Tech's central printing system, which, as a member of the community, I am entitled to use, virtually unlimited, at no cost.  I settled on a self-assemble Office Depot three hole report cover, with a clear front and black backing.

At his request, the copy on the Internet is password-protected.  You can contact him for a password, and then click on the links below.  If you have technical problems, please contact me and I will endeavor to work through them with you.  Two different links are provided: one is to the actual PDF file, which I recommend for all uses; and the other is to an HTML file I created of the manuscript, in case you do not have Adobe Acrobat Reader (which is available, for free, at http://www.adobe.com/support/downloads/main.html).

You are welcome to save the file and print copies for your use.  Please do not 're-publish' these elsewhere, as Grandpa requested they be password-protected.  The most recent version will remain online at this location.
